After three months of arriving in Malawi, I finally feel like we are starting to settle and things are feeling more like home, hurray! When we decided to move, neither of us knew what to expect; it’s hard enough moving house in the UK and trying to get used to the new area, let alone moving to one of the poorest countries in the world, and having to get used to a totally new way of life, culture, work, insane heat… and Mosquitos. But over these past few months we’ve become masters of how to deal with hardly and power or water, how to shop when places only open if they feel like it, how to stop monkeys from stealing your clothes and how to use a napkin to hold the melting steering wheel. So I think we’re getting there! It’s been crazy, but amazing. We sat just the other night, now having chance to reflect on the most manic year and said how we don’t regret any of it.
And now after getting settled it’s time; time to get planning and working. Writing, recording, collaborations, locations, themes, documenting, branding… finally I can make a start on the most awesome project; recording an album in Africa!
I can’t begin to tell you how excited I am! Since arriving in August we’ve done so much and everywhere we’ve gone I’ve taken my lyric book, and I don’t think I’ve ever written so much before! Malawi is amazing; I just feel so inspired.
But I’m really taking my time with this Album. I want to do it right. I don’t just want to write a load of‘ok’ songs, get recordings down as quickly as I can, just because it’s all brand new. I want to focus on writing the best songs I possibly can and meeting the best people and groups to collaborate with. I’ve written songs before and jumped straight into record them, to find that I can’t perform them as well because I haven’t had a chance to really get to know them inside out. I believe only then can you capture, not only a strong recording, but a great performance too.
And I want to take time to really immerse myself in the African music and culture; I’m going to be collaborating with some awesome local artists, drummers and choirs, and I just can’t wait!
I’ve got this most amazing, once in a life time (cheesy as it sounds!) opportunity and i’m determined to do it right.
So right now it’s writing writing writing! And I’m loving it. I’ve currently in the middle of my forth brand new song here. It’s such a beautiful thing to be able to sit and write, watching the monkeys from our balcony and the orange sunsets every night.
So keep a look out on here and I’ll be posting snips of brand new songs, videos and blogs of how it’s all going. I really hope you enjoy them!
